English Heritage
English Heritage, the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England, was set up under the National Heritage Act, 1983. Responsible for the care and maintenance of many ancient monuments, historic buildings, and sites, this role includes making grants and giving assistance towards the conservation of privately owned properties, supporting archaeological excavation and research, and giving advice on the listing and scheduling of special sites. A wide variety of sites are in the care of English Heritage and, open to the public, are presented with informative displays, exhibitions, and occasional re-enactments of historic events.
