DOH). — (O)F. ut; the lowest of the series ut, re, mi, fa, sol, la, si, said to be taken from the office hymn for St. John Baptist's day: Ut queant laxis resonare fibris / Mira gestorum famuli tuorum / Solve polluti labii reatum, / Sancte Iohannes. ut. Keynote of major scale, according to system of vocal syllables derived from d'Arezzo, now generally replaced by do (doh in Tonic Sol-fa). In many countries, incl. France, ut and doh have become attached to C in whatever key this may occur.
