Tynemouth

Tynemouth , city (1991 pop. 60,022), North Tyneside metropolitan district, NE England, on the Tyne River. Tynemouth is highly industrialized. Formerly a shipbuilding center and a coal and fishing port, its manufactures now include furniture, textiles, glassware, machine tools, and die castings. It is also a resort. There are remains of a priory founded by King Edwin of Northumbria early in the 7th cent.

Tynemouth N. Tyne. Tinanmuthe 792. ‘Mouth of the River Tyne’. Pre-Celtic river-name (meaning simply ‘flowing one, river’) + OE mūtha. The unitary authorities North Tyneside and South Tyneside are named from the same river.
