Tuva

Tuva, Russia Tyva/Tannu‐Tuva Formerly a province and now a republic named after the Tuvans. It was part of the Chinese Empire in 1757–1911 before falling to the Russians. It was independent as the Tannu‐Tuva People's Republic in 1921–44 when it was annexed by the Soviet Union and established as an autonomous province; it became an autonomous republic in 1961. The first part of the previous name recognized the Tannu‐Ola mountain range.
