Turkestan

Turkestan

Turkestan, Central Asia, Kazakhstan 1. Central Asia: a historic region, also spelt Turkistan. It was meant to represent that region in which Turkic peoples lived, ‘Land of the Turks’, but this is only partly true. The region included Tajikistan, but the Tajiks are not Turkic; nor, of course, did it include Turkey. Turkestan was divided in 1762 into Russian West Turkestan, which comprised modern southern Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, and Chinese East Turkestan, comprising the present Sinkiang Uighur Autonomous Region. In 1924 Joseph Stalin carved up the Turkestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic into four ethnic republics (for the Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Turkmen, and Uzbeks), the Tajiks being included in Uzbekistan until 1929.2. Kazakhstan: see Türkistan.
