Westphalia, Treaty of (1648) The treaty signed at Münster and Osnabrück, which brought the THIRTY YEARS WAR to a conclusion. By its terms, the Habsburgs acknowledged the independence of Switzerland and the separation of the UNITED PROVINCES from the SPANISH NETHERLANDS, France secured undefined rights in Alsace and retained the bishoprics of Metz, Toul, and Verdun, Sweden acquired West Pomerania and the bishoprics of Bremen and Verden, and Brandenburg acquired East Pomerania and the succession to the archbishopric of Magdeburg.
