Transjordan

Transjordan

Transjordan, an integral part of the British mandate of Palestine until 1921 when Emir Abdullah ascended the throne. Trans jordan's independence was recognized in 1928, but the British Resident retained important powers, and it remained a British mandate until 1946. The Arab Legion, a police force lead by British officers, had been raised in Transjordan during the 1920s. This helped as part of HABFORCE to quell the revolt in Iraq in May 1941. With the country's regular army, the Transjordan Frontier Force which was also led by British officers, it also helped to overrun Vichy French forces in the Syrian campaign. Otherwise, apart from a Vichy air raid on the capital, Amman, the country, with its population of some 300,000 Arabs, was untouched by the war. From 1946, when full independence was achieved, it was known as the Kingdom of Jordan and became the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in 1949.
