Tortuga Island
Tortuga Island (French: Île de la Tortue), Haiti An island off the north coast of Haiti settled by the Spanish in 1629 and called by them Tortuga ‘Tortoise’ because of the presence of these creatures. When France took control of the island in 1665 the island was given the French version of the name.

Tortuga
Tortuga [Span.,=turtle], island, c.70 sq mi (180 sq km), off N Haiti. It was a notorious rendezvous of pirates in the 17th cent. It is called Île de la Tortue by the Haitians. |
