Topsy
Topsy name of the young slave girl in Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), who says of herself ‘I s'pect I growed. Don't think nobody never made me.’ From this, Topsy is taken as the type of something which seems to have grown of itself without anyone's intention or direction.
