Tony Cragg

Cragg, Tony

Cragg, Tony (1949– ). British sculptor. He was born in Liverpool, and after studying at the Royal College of Art he settled in Germany in 1977. In his early work he grouped fragments of junk (such as discarded household plastic) to form simple shapes or images arranged on the floor or wall (Union Jack, City Art Gallery, Leeds, 1981). According to Lynne Cook (in the Thames and Hudson Encyclopaedia of British Art, 1985), ‘The unassuming appearance of these works belies the philosophical issues at stake, which arise from the interaction of image, material and title.’ Since 1984 Cragg has made free-standing sculptures, some using geometric wooden frames stacked together, others combining ready-made utilitarian objects with plastic or stone. One of his most conspicuous works is Raleigh (1986), outside the Tate Gallery, Liverpool. The gallery's publication Sculpture on Merseyside (1988) writes of it: ‘ Cragg returned to his hometown to make a sculpture for this site … He used different materials from those he normally worked with to respond to the dock site and Liverpool's tradition of heavy industry. He selected two granite and a number of cast iron bollards from an artefact store, and the casts for the sculpture were made from Cragg's drawings in the Bootle iron foundry, Bruce & Hyslop. The horns symbolize a fanfare of greeting or farewell, and also suggest messages carried across the water.’ In 1988 Cragg represented Britain at the Venice Biennale, and also won the Turner Prize.
