Sky art

A Dictionary of Twentieth-Century Art | 1999 | | © A Dictionary of Twentieth-Century Art 1999, originally published by Oxford University Press 1999. (Hide copyright information) Copyright

Sky art. A term coined in 1969 by the German artist Otto Piene to describe works, generally large in scale, that are viewed in or from the sky. It has been used to embrace traditional activities such as kite-flying and firework displays and also works using highly advanced technology. Examples by Piene include Olympic Rainbow (1972), consisting of five helium-filled polythene tubes each 600 metres long, produced for the Munich Olympic Games, and Sky Kiss (1981–6), in which Charlotte Moorman (see VIDEO ART) played her cello whilst suspended from helium-filled tubes. Among the artists who uses high technology is Tom Van Sant (1926– ), whose work includes Desert Sun (1986), in which a series of mirrors reflected sunlight to the sensors of a satellite orbiting the earth. See also AIR ART.
