Tobago
Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago An island so named by Christopher Columbus† when he discovered it in 1498. Columbus was impressed by the natives' practice of stuffing the leaves of the tobacco plant in pipes and setting fire to them in the belief that this had medicinal value. The name either comes from the Haitian tambaku ‘pipe’ or from the local word tabaco, a reference to its crops.
