Tilbury, Canada, UK 1. Canada (Ontario): founded as Tilbury West Township and Tilbury East Township at the end of the 18th century. They merged into Henderson after the postmaster, David Henderson, in 1871. In 1887 this was changed to Tilbury Centre; the ‘Centre’ was dropped in 1895. Lying on the River Thames, the town was named after the Tilbury in England, which also lies on the River Thames.2. UK (England): formerly Tilaburg and Tiliberia, most likely ‘Tila's Stronghold’ from an Old English personal name and burh.

Tilbury Town, fictitious setting of many poems by Edwin Arlington Robinson, a place of conventional and materialistic values, presumably modeled on his hometown, Gardiner, Me. In it dwell such characters as Miniver Cheevy, Flammonde, Annandale, Richard Cory, John Evereldown, Mr. Flood, and Luke Havergal, whose characterizations and soliloquies reveal their conflicts with the prevailing town mores. Sixty‐three of the poems were gathered as Tilbury Town (1953) by Lawrance Thompson.

Tilbury , part of the urban district of Thurrock , Essex, E England. Tilbury Fort originated under Henry VIII; it was rebuilt and strengthened in the 17th cent. Queen Elizabeth I, in 1588, reviewed royal troops there when the Spanish Armada threatened England. The Tilbury docks, begun in 1882, make Tilbury the main container port of the Port of London.

Tilbury Thurr. Tilaburg 731, Tiliberia 1086 (DB). Probably ‘stronghold of a man called Tila’. OE pers. name + burh (dative byrig). Alternatively the first element may be a lost stream-name *Tila ‘the useful one’.

Tilbury in 1588, the point on the north bank of the River Thames at which troops for the defence of England against the Armada were assembled, and the site of Elizabeth I's speech to her forces.
