Tilbury Town

The Oxford Companion to American Literature | 1995 | | © The Oxford Companion to American Literature 1995, originally published by Oxford University Press 1995. (Hide copyright information) Copyright

Tilbury Town, fictitious setting of many poems by Edwin Arlington Robinson, a place of conventional and materialistic values, presumably modeled on his hometown, Gardiner, Me. In it dwell such characters as Miniver Cheevy, Flammonde, Annandale, Richard Cory, John Evereldown, Mr. Flood, and Luke Havergal, whose characterizations and soliloquies reveal their conflicts with the prevailing town mores. Sixty‐three of the poems were gathered as Tilbury Town (1953) by Lawrance Thompson.
