Tigre

Tigré

Tigré A formerly independent territory which came under Ethiopian suzerainty in 1894. It was occupied by the Italians in 1935 and was administered as part of Eritrea. It was liberated by the British, who exercised control until 1952, when it reverted to Ethiopian suzereignty. In subsequent decades, the Ethopian leadership was determined to quell every desire for greater autonomy, which gave rise to the Tigré People's Liberation Front (TPLF). By early 1990, the TPLF controlled most of the territory. Together with the Eritrean liberation forces, the TPLF advanced into Ethiopia and its capital, Addis Ababa, in 1991. It deposed the Communist leadership and established a new government under the Tigréan leader, Meles Zenawi.
