Parnell, Thomas (1679–1718), was archdeacon of Clogher and a friend of Swift and Pope (to whose Iliad he contributed an introductory essay). He was a member of the Scriblerus Club. His ‘Hymn to Contentment’ was published in Steele's Poetical Miscellanies (1714) and his mock-heroic Homer's Battle of the Frogs and Mice with the Remarks of Zoilus in 1717 (see Batrachomyomachia), but most of his work was published posthumously by Pope in 1721. His poems include ‘The Hermit’, a moral narrative in heroic couplets, and ‘Night-Piece on Death’, in fluent octosyllabics, perhaps the first of the 18th-cent. graveyard poems which in Goldsmith's view inspired ‘all those night-pieces and churchyard scenes that have since appeared’ ( Goldsmith's Life of Parnell, 1770).
