Thomas Doughty
Thomas Doughty 1793–1856, American painter of the Hudson River school , b. Philadelphia. Although self-taught, he was one of the first American landscape painters to win widespread recognition at home and abroad. His paintings, few in number, are mostly of river scenery. Among the best are On the Hudson and A River Glimpse (Metropolitan Mus.); A View of the Schuylkill (Edinburgh Mus.); and others in the Corcoran Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
