Thingvellir
Thingvellir, Iceland Derived from thing ‘assembly’ and vella ‘to spurt’, a reference to where the Althing ‘Parliament’ met in 930–1798, and the local geysers. This was on the northern end of Lake Thingvallavatn ‘Assembly Plains Lake’ from thing, völlur ‘plains’, and vatn ‘lake’.

Thingvellir
Thingvellir , Icelandic Þingvellir, a wide lava plain, since 1928 a national park, the ancient place of assembly of the Icelandic Althing , which met there from 930 to 1798. It is located c.30 mi (50 km) NE of Reykjavík, on the north shore of Thingvallavatn. |
