Theatre of Satire

Satire, Theatre of

Satire, Theatre of, Moscow. This theatre, which opened in 1924, was intended for the production of revues on domestic and political topics, but soon began staging satirical comedies such as Katayev's Squaring the Circle (1926). This policy was maintained, though its tone was muted during the last years of Stalin's rule; after his death the theatre flourished again and there were revivals of Mayakovsky's three major plays. Under the directorship of Valentin Pluchek (1909– ), appointed in 1957, it mounted a series of successful productions, outstanding among which were Shaw's Heartbreak House, Gogol's The Government Inspector, Sartre's Nekrassov, and Beaumarchais's The Marriage of Figaro. During the late 1960s the company, originally housed on Mayakovsky Square, moved into a magnificent new theatre next door to the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall. Rozov's Nest of the Wood Grouse was staged in 1981.
