Theatre Royal
Theatre Royal, Hobart, Tasmania, the oldest playhouse in Australia. It opened officially in 1837 with Morton's Speed the Plough. Little of the original building is now to be seen except for the external walls, which show evidence of successive changes. The classical front façade was added in 1860 and in 1911 the auditorium was reconstructed in Edwardian style. Additions to the theatre in the 1970s provided new dressing rooms and office accommodation. A fire in 1984 seriously damaged the building, which was restored and its backstage facilities upgraded through public donation and Government funds. The theatre is now owned by the Tasmanian Government and managed by the Theatre Royal Management Board, which also brings international and interstate attractions into Tasmania.
