Hague, The
Hague, The (᾽s Gravenhage, Den Haag) The Netherlands Haga Comitis ‘The Count's Hedge’. A settlement developed round the original hunting lodge built in 1248 in a woodland area called Haghe ‘hedge’ for Count William II. ᾽s Gravenhage thus means ‘The Counts’ Private Enclosure', Den Haag merely being a shortening of this name. It became the principal residence of the Counts of Holland. The 1907 Hague Convention laid down the law governing the conduct of international warfare. The Hague is the seat of government and administrative capital of The Netherlands, but not the official capital which is Amsterdam.
