Thames, Canada, New Zealand, UK, USA 1. A river in all four countries, those in Canada, New Zealand and the USA being named after the river in England.2. Canada (Ontario): renamed in 1792 from La Tranche.3. UK (England): the Romano‐British name Tamesis or Tamesa is thought to come from a Celtic root tam ‘dark’ to give the ‘Dark(‐coloured) River’. It may be, however, a pre‐Celtic name. In Oxfordshire it is known as the Isis, a form of regression to Tamesis.
