Territorial Army
Territorial Army (TA), a part‐time, volunteer branch of the British army. Although units were first raised in Northern Ireland in the late 1930s for coast defence, a full TA organization was not established until 1946. The ‘Territorials’ reached a peak strength of over 7,000 men and women in 1954, falling back to some 3,000 in the 1990s. The force has never been used for any sort of internal security duties.
