Temptation of Christ
Temptation of Christ. In the account of the temptation of Christ in the wilderness, three particular temptations are described in Mt. 4:1–11:
(1). (1) to use His power as Son of God to turn stones into bread to satisfy His hunger; (2). (2) to cast Himself down from a pinnacle of the Temple, i.e. to put God to an arbitrary test and to stage a spectacular miracle; and (3). to obtain from the devil power over all the kingdoms of the world by falling down and worshipping him, i.e. to desert His true mission for the sake of power unworthily obtained. In Lk. 4: 1–13 the last two temptations are related in the reverse order. |
