Tartary

Tartary

Tartary Not a geographical term, but at one time or another it has been used to describe a huge area of Central Asia from the Caspian Sea to the Pacific Ocean. More recently, it has been applied to the Sinkiang Uighur (Xinjiang Uygur) Autonomous Region in China (Chinese Turkestan) and the surrounding highlands. During the expansion of the Russian Empire eastwards all the non‐Christian tribes were grouped together as ‘Tartars’ (previously and again now Tatars), the extra r being inserted to bring to mind the Greek word tartarus ‘hell’. A ‘tartar’ is now a violent or irascible person. See Tatarstan.
