tartan, or tartane, a small coasting vessel of the Mediterranean, possibly a development of the medieval tarette, which originated with the Arabs for use as a cargo-carrying vessel. Tartans were single masted with a lateen mainsail and a small foresail set on a bowsprit. They carried a crew of about 30 men. Simultaneously, there were in the Mediterranean fishing vessels known as tartanas; unlike the true tartan they had a flat bottom.
