Tarshish
Tarshish , in the Bible. 1 Eponym of a country distant from Palestine which cannot be accurately identified; Cyprus, Spain, and Tarsus (S Asia Minor) have been suggested. Traditionally, Tarshish is identified with Spain—with the region and city of Tartessus, a Phoenician settlement of S Spain. Scholars suggest that the biblical "ships of Tarshish" held cargo for metal-manufacturing centers on the Mediterranean coast. 2 Counselor of Ahasuerus in the Book of Esther. 3 Benjamite in First Chronicles. |

Tarshish
Tarshish A port on the Mediterranean to which Jonah was fleeing (Jonah 1: 3), possibly in Spain or Cyprus (Isa. 23: 1)—though the cargo of gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks brought by the ships of Tarshish to King Solomon (1 Kgs. 10: 22) argues a more exotic region. There is a dispute whether ‘ships of Tarshish’ (e.g. 1 Kgs. 22: 48) meant ships of a particular type or ships whose destination was Tarshish.
