Tarka

Tarka

Tarka (Skt., ‘reason’, ‘philosophy’). An activity of mind usually condemned by Buddhists. In the Upaniṣads, tarka is held to be a preliminary, but inadequate, means for understanding the ultimate. The Buddhist canon generally speaks of tarka in the pejorative sense of vain speculation.
