Tarifa

Tarifa , town, Cádiz prov., S Spain, in Andalusia. A minor seaport on the Strait of Gibraltar, it is the southernmost city of the European mainland. It was founded by the Greeks and later became the first Roman colony in Spain. The Berber leader Tarik captured it in 711. Tarifa is named after Tarif, another Berber chief.

Tarīfa, Andalusia/Spain Named after Tarīfa Abū Zur᾽a who was ordered to carry out an armed reconnaissance, across the Strait of Gibraltar, of the most southerly part of the Iberian Peninsula roughly opposite Tangier in 709–10. This was a precursor to the Muslim invasion of Spain in 711.
