Taoyuan
Taoyuan, Taiwan Huxuzhuang, Taoziyuan, Taojian A county and a city with a name meaning ‘Garden of Peach Trees’ from táo ‘peach’ and yuán ‘garden’. Settlers arriving in 1737 planted many peach trees and further immigrants in 1745 carried on the practice. The city developed as an agricultural market centre. The original name used characters representing hŭ ‘tiger’, xù, a type of chestnut‐leaved oak tree, and zhuāng ‘village’. In 1747 the city was renamed Taoziyuan from zĭ ‘young animals’ and it was also known as Taojian from jiàn ‘mountain stream’. The present name was adopted in 1903.
