Tanganyika

Tanganyika

Tanganyika, Democratic Republic of the Congo‐Tanzania A lake with Burundi and Zambia also abutting onto it. The origin of the name is unclear. Sir Henry Morton Stanley, who saw the lake in 1871 when he found Dr Livingstone at Ujiji, claimed that the local word nika meant ‘plain’ or ‘flat’ and that Africans are wont to describe large bodies of water as resembling plains; thus he was satisfied that the name meant ‘Plain‐like Lake’. Sir Richard Burton (1821–90), with John Hanning Speke (1827–64), were the first Europeans to see the lake in 1858 and their theory was that the name came from the local words kou tanganyika ‘to meet’, perhaps a reference to the fact that the lake is fed by a number of rivers or that tribes met here.
