Kościuszko, Tadeusz
Kościuszko, Tadeusz (or Kościuszko Thaddeus) (1746–1817) Polish soldier and patriot. A trained soldier, he fought for the American colonists during the War of American Independence, returning to Poland in 1784. Ten years later he led a nationalist uprising, defeating a large Russian force at Racławice. Captured and imprisoned by the Russians (1794–96), he eventually moved to France, where he devoted the rest of his life to the cause of Polish independence.

Kosciuszko, Tadeusz
Kosciuszko, Tadeusz (1746–1817) Polish soldier and statesman. After the second partition of Poland in 1793, he led a revolutionary movement to regain Polish independence. It was initially successful, but the invading armies of Russia and Prussia proved too strong, and Kościuszko was imprisoned (1794–96) and then exiled.
