Beach, Sylvia

Beach, Sylvia (1887–1962), bookshop owner and publisher, born in Baltimore, Maryland; owner from 1919 of the Shakespeare and Company bookshop and lending library on the Left Bank in Paris, meeting place for writers as diverse as Joyce, Hemingway, Gide, and Sherwood Anderson. When Joyce could find no publisher for Ulysses after instalments of its serialization in the Little Review had been found obscene, she published it under the Shakespeare and Company imprint in 1922, funding the enterprise through subscription.

Beach, Sylvia

Beach, Sylvia (1887–1962), bookseller. An expatriate, she kept a bookshop at No. 12 Rue de l'Odéon, Paris, known as Shakespeare & Co. Beach was encouraging and generous to new writers of all nationalities throughout the 1920s. She wrote of this in Shakespeare & Co. (1959). She was the first publisher of Joyce's Ulysses (1922), using French typesetters.
