Strumica

Strumica

Strumica, Macedonia Tiveriopol/Tiberiopolis The former name is said to have been adopted by the Byzantines after the relics of the fifteen martyrs of Tiberiopolis ‘City of Tiberius’, after Tiberius (42 bc–ad 37), Roman emperor (14–37), were brought here. The present name was used in parallel and comes from the Strumica River, a tributary of the Struma River (when in Greece, the Strimon), which may be named after Struma, the daughter of Tiberius.
