USA (Massachusetts): founded as part of Dorchester in 1713 and renamed in 1726 after William Stoughton (1631–1701), first lieutenant‐governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony (1692–1701) and its chief justice.

Stoughton

Stoughton , town (1990 pop. 26,777), Norfolk co., E Mass.; founded 1637, inc. 1726. A largely residential town, it was the site of shoe and textile industries in the 1800s. Today, manufacturing includes electrical and medical equipment, machinery, plastics, and sporting goods.
