Stephen Phillips

Phillips, Stephen

Phillips, Stephen (1864–1915), English poet and dramatist, who for a short time was a member of the Shakespearian company of his cousin Frank Benson. He had had two plays, Herod (1900) and Ulysses (1902), produced by Tree at Her Majesty's Theatre when, later in 1902, his poetic tragedy Paolo and Francesca was produced by George Alexander at the St James's Theatre, with the young Henry Ainley as Paolo. Its great success was believed to herald a new era of poetry in the English theatre, but his next play, Nero (1906), showed such a falling-off that, like the rest of Phillips's work, it was soon forgotten.
