Stefano della Bella

Bella, Stefano della

Bella, Stefano della (b Florence, 18 May 1610; d Florence, 22 July 1664). Italian etcher and draughtsman. He was one of the greatest and most prolific printmakers of his day, producing more than 1,000 etchings (as well as a huge number of drawings). Most of his career was spent in his native Florence, where his patrons included the Medici family, but he also worked in Rome (1633–9) and in Paris (1639–50). His output was highly varied, including military scenes, landscapes, animal subjects, and designs for masques. Early in his career he was strongly influenced by Callot, but later his style became more naturalistic, reflecting his admiration for Rembrandt's prints (he visited the Netherlands in 1647).

Stefano della Bella , 1610–64, Italian engraver, b. Florence. First copying the manner of Jacques Callot, his style changed somewhat when he traveled to Rome, Paris, and the Netherlands.
