Stedelijk Museum
Stedelijk Museum (Municipal Museum), Amsterdam. One of the world's outstanding collections of international modern art. It had its origins in the bequest of Sophia de Bruyn-Suasso to the city in 1890. A handsome building was erected to house the bequest and also modern pictures for which there was no room in the city's foremost museum, the Rijksmuseum, and it was opened as the Stedelijk Museum in 1895. A new wing was added in 1954 and there have been further extensions. The collection of painting and sculpture ranges from about 1850 to the present day. It is rich in Dutch works and has other areas of great strength, notably the world's finest representation of Malevich's paintings.
