Stanford
Stanford ♂ Transferred use of the surname, in origin a local name from the very numerous places named with the Old English elements stān ‘stone’ + ford ‘ford’. Use as a given name may have been influenced by the prestigious Californian university named after Senator Leland Stanford, on whose land it was built. It may also in some cases have been adopted as an alternative elaboration of Stan.
