Standish
Standish ♂ Transferred use of the English surname, in origin a local name from a place in Lancashire named with the Old English elements stān ‘stone’ + edisc ‘pasture’. This was borne most famously by Miles Standish (?1584–1656), soldier, military leader, and law-enforcement officer of the Pilgrim Fathers, the subject of a historically inaccurate poem by Longfellow.
