Stalls

Stalls

Stalls, individual seats between the stage front and the pit, those nearest the stage being known as Orchestra Stalls. They first appeared in the 1830s to 1840s, after the raising of the first circle had allowed the pit to extend further back. With the exception of boxes and the front of the Dress Circle they are the most expensive seats in the theatre. They were at one time called by their French name of fauteuils. In some theatres the term Balcony Stalls was applied to the front rows of the Dress Circle.
