Stafford
Stafford city (1991 pop. 60,915) and district, Staffordshire, W central England, on the Sow River, above its junction with the Trent. Stafford's chief industry is the manufacture of electrical goods; other products are concrete, shoes and shoe-repairing machinery, and salt. The county seat of Staffordshire, the city has several half-timbered houses and two old churches that were restored by George Gilbert Scott . Izaak Walton was born there; his cottage at nearby Shallowford is a museum. Richard Sheridan represented Stafford in Parliament from 1780 to 1806. |

Stafford
Stafford, UK, USA UK (England); formerly Stæfford and Stadford ‘Ford at a Landing Place’ from the Old English stæth ‘landing place’ and ford. Lying on the River Sow, it was an important trading centre and so the landing place grew into a market town. The county's name, Staffordshire, from Stafford and scīr came into use during the 11th century.

Stafford
Stafford ♂ Transferred use of the surname, in origin a local name from any of various places so called from Old English stæð ‘landing place’ + ford ‘ford’, most notably the county town of Staffordshire. This was the surname of the family that held the dukedom of Buckingham in the 15th and 16th centuries.
