Śrāvaka
Śrāvaka (Skt., ‘one who hears’). In Eastern religions, a layperson with religious commitment. In Buddhism, it referred originally to personal disciples of the Buddha, or to students in general, but in Mahāyāna, it refers to those who, in contrast to bodhisattvas, seek personal enlightenment to the level of arhat.
