South Pole

South Pole Southernmost geographical point on the Earth's surface. The magnetic south pole is located c.2400km (1500mi) from the geographical South Pole, which lies 2992m (9816ft) above sea level c.500km (300mi) s of the Ross Ice Shelf. It was first reached (1911) by Roald Amundsen.

South Pole southern end of the earth's axis, lat. 90° S. It is distinguished from the south magnetic pole . The South Pole was reached first by Roald Amundsen , a Norwegian explorer, in 1911. See Antarctica .
