Song Qingling

Song Qingling ( Soong Ch'ing-ling) (b. 27 Jan. 1893, d. 29 May 1981). Chinese socialist Born at Shanghai, she was educated at Wesleyan College for Women at Macon, Georgia. She became Sun Yat-sen's secretary in 1913, and married him in that same year. As Sun's widow, she was able persistently to speak out with impunity against the National Government and Chiang's confrontational policies against the Communist Party. She opposed her sister's marriage to Chiang, and broke with her brother, T. V. Soong, over his support of what she considered a corrupt regime, which violated the spirit of her late husband. Although not a Communist until the very end of her life, she was a much-respected figure in the Communist People's Republic of China, of which she was made Deputy Chairwoman (1959) and Honorary President (1981).
