Hurok, Sol

Hurok, Sol (1888–1974), producer. The Russian‐born impresario, best known for his work in the fields of music and ballet, frequently brought over major foreign theatrical companies to America, including the Habimah Players in 1926, the Moscow Art Players in 1935, and, after World War II, Compagnie Madeleine Renaud‐Jean Louis Barrault, Théâtre Nationale Populaire, Comédie Française, the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, the Bristol Old Vic, and many others. Hurok also occasionally arranged tours for such American artists as Margaret Webster and Eva Le Gallienne. Autobiography: Impresario, with Ruth Goode, 1946.

Sol Hurok

Sol Hurok , 1888–1974, American impresario, b. Russia. Emigrating to the United States in 1906, Hurok was a peddler, streetcar conductor, bottlewasher, and hardware salesman before becoming the foremost impresario of his age. By his own estimation, he presented more than 4,000 artists and companies, among them Pavlova, Marian Anderson, the Comédie Française, the Old Vic Company, the Royal Ballet, Andrés Segovia, Jean-Louis Barrault, and Victoria de los Angeles. The film Tonight We Sing (1953) was based on his autobiography, Impresario (1946).
