Smithfield

Concise Dictionary of World Place-Names | 2005 | | Copyright

Smithfield, South Africa, USA South Africa (Free State): originally Smith Town or Smith Field when founded in 1849, it was named after Sir Harry Smith (1787–1860), governor of Cape Colony (1847–52). In due course the name was changed to New Smithfield and later still the ‘New’ was dropped.

The Columbia Encyclopedia, 6th ed. | 2011 | Copyright

Smithfield town (1990 pop. 19,163), Providence co., N R.I.; set off from Providence and inc. 1731. Long a textile town, it now has diversified industries. It was settled early in the 18th cent., mainly by Quakers. Bryant Univ. is there.
