Smithfield

Smithfield district of the City of London, England. Beginning in the 12th cent., it was used for fairs, markets, jousts, and executions. During the reign of Queen Mary I (1553-58), Protestants were executed there. London's central meat market is in Smithfield.

Smithfield a locality in London, long the site of a cattle and horse market and then a meat-market; the name was originally Smethefield, from smethe ‘smooth’. In the 16th century, it was also the place where heretics were executed at the stake.
