Watson-Watt, Sir Robert
Watson-Watt, Sir Robert (1892–1973),British inventor of radar. He developed his discovery at the radio department of the National Physical Laboratory at Teddington where he was superintendent, and then, after receiving the backing of the Tizard committee in 1935, at the air ministry's Bawdsey research station which he set up in 1936. In 1938 he became director of communications development at the air ministry. He was knighted in 1942. See also scientists at war.

Sir William Watson
Sir William Watson 1858–1935, English poet. His first great success was Wordsworth's Grave (1890), followed by a meditative elegy on Tennyson, Lachrymae Musarum (1892). He is also remembered for sonnets and lyrics. He was knighted in 1917. |
