Price, Sir Uvedale

A Dictionary of Architecture and Landscape Architecture | 2000 | | Copyright

Price, Sir Uvedale (1747–1829). Author of Essay on the Picturesque (1794) and important influence on the cult of the Picturesque (which he defined as a separate aesthetic category, identifiable as distinct as Burke's categories of the Beautiful and the Sublime). He, more than anybody, encouraged landscape-gardeners to study the works of celebrated landscape-painters for precedents. He, as well as R. Payne Knight, Nash, and Repton, also influenced the development of ‘natural’ English landscape-design.

Price, Sir Uvedale (b ?Foxley Hall, Herefordshire, 1747; d Foxley Hall, 14 Sept. 1829). English landed gentleman and writer, a leading proponent of the Picturesque. He laid out his Herefordshire estate, Foxley, on Picturesque principles, aiming for variety and irregularity, and his Essay on the Picturesque (1794) is one of the main literary works of the movement. His other writings include a translation of selections from Pausanias (1780).
