Sir Samuel Garth

Sir Samuel Garth 1661-1719, English poet and physician, b. Yorkshire. He studied medicine at Leiden and Cambridge. His chief work is the satirical poem The Dispensary (1699), in which he advocates free dispensaries for the treatment of the poor and ridicules those who oppose them.

Garth, Sir Samuel (1661–1719), a physician, free-thinker, and member of the Kit-Cat Club, is remembered as the author of The Dispensary (1699), a burlesque poem in which he ridiculed the opposition of apothecaries to the supply of medicines to out-patients' dispensaries. Pope described him as ‘the best good Christian without knowing it’. See topographical poetry and mock epic.
