Sir Roger de Coverley

Coverley, Sir Roger de

Coverley, Sir Roger de, a character described in the Spectator, a member of the Spectator Club, ‘a gentleman of Worcestershire, of ancient descent, a baronet. His great-grandfather was inventor of that famous country-dance which is called after him. He is a gentleman that is very singular in his behaviour, but his singularities proceeded from his good sense …It is said he keeps himself a batchelor, by reason he was crossed in love by a perverse beautiful widow of the next county to him.’ (No. 2, by Steele.) He figures in a number of Spectator papers by both Addison and Steele. His death is reported in No. 517, by Addison.
